Sodium-glucose co-transporter-2 (SGLT2) inhibitors used to treat diabetes may mask the potentially dangerous condition of ketoacidosis at the time of surgery.
A recent literature review found 42 cases of people with diabetes who presented for various surgeries while taking gliflozin medications. Their blood glucose levels were normal before surgery, but they experienced euglycemic ketoacidosis. They also noted five cases of hyperglycemic diabetic ketoacidosis (Br J Anaesth
