LAS VEGAS—The emergency department (ED) is not always a safe place for older patients. Polypharmacy, poor nutrition, sleep deprivation and other insults to the mind and body can trigger bouts of delirium that have been shown to boost mortality by at least 25%. Fortunately, a relatively new geriatric care model, known as the Age-Friendly Emergency Department (AFED), can reduce these risk factors and improve clinical outcomes.
That’s been the case at the
