Fast-Dissolving Suppository Shows Promise for Preventing HIV Through Anal Sex

A quickly dissolving suppository being developed as an “on-demand” HIV prevention method was found to be safe and well tolerated, according to a presentation at CROI 2023, in Seattle.

The results also found that the insert delivered high levels of the antiretroviral drugs tenofovir alafenamide (TAF) and elvitegravir (EVG) to rectal tissue and fluid, with little drug circulating elsewhere in the body (presentation 164).
