Shingles Increases Risk for MI, Stroke

By PPN News Staff

Contracting herpes zoster or shingles, a reactivation of the chickenpox virus, increases a person's risk for stroke and myocardial infarction (J Am Coll Cardiol 2017 Jul 3. [Epub ahead of print]).

According to the CDC, nearly one of every three people in the United States will develop shingles in their lifetime. Although anyone who has had chickenpox may develop shingles, the risk increases as a person gets older.
