Bacterial resistance to colistin remains low, but is widespread across the United States, according to a new study.

Colistin, a decades-old polymyxin antibiotic, has been revisited due to its noted success against carbapenem-resistant Enterobacteriaceae (CRE) in vitro.

However, reports of plasmid-mediated resistance by the mcr-1 gene have raised questions about the drug’s continued effectiveness against resistant bacteria. A new study presented at the ASM Microbe 2017
