When Prescribing Warfarin, Help Patients Understand Risks

Advanced age is a powerful risk factor for thromboembolic stroke in patients with atrial fibrillation (AF), and oral anticoagulation reduces this risk by almost two-thirds in patients at risk (JAMA Cardiol 2016 Mar 9. [Epub ahead of print]). However, using these drugs increases the risk for traumatic intracranial bleeding, especially right after the drugs are initiated.
 
Because the potential for traumatic intracranial bleeding, which is most commonly attributable to
