Multiple opportunities exist for clinicians to optimize care for patients with opioid use disorder (OUD) in the ICU, experts said at the 2024 Critical Care Congress, in Phoenix.
Opioids—mainly synthetic opioids other than methadone—are the main driver of drug overdose deaths, with opioids involved in 80,411 of the fatalities in 2021, according to the CDC. The COVID-19 pandemic has played a contributing role in recent years, noted William Peppard, PharmD, BCPS, FCCM,
