Local Anesthetics: Evolving to a New Standard of Care

Recent advances have extended the duration of action of local anesthetic agents, which has broadened their potential clinical application, making them a routine component of certain postsurgical pain management regimens. This monograph provides a brief history of local anesthetics and their continuing progress from early development to their current foundational role in the evolving new standard of care for management of postsurgical pain. Emphasis also is made on the important role that pharmacists can play in optimizing the management of pain following surgery.
